Why invest in Lewisham?

Clear vision

Our spatial strategy is rooted in principles of fair and sustainable growth and commits to a nearly 10 per cent uplift in housing target. We are working with residents, landowners and key stakeholders to work towards delivery of this plan.

Thriving town centres

Planned investment in our town centres, including the £24m town centre improvement of Lewisham High Street using Government’s town centre improvements (formerly Levelling Up) fund, will help create vibrant and attractive town centres that people want to visit, boosting local spending, strengthening our night-time economy and supporting business growth.

Excellent transport potential

The borough already boasts a range of transport links, including direct rail services into Zone 1 in less than 10 minutes, the London Overground and the Docklands Light Railway. The planned Bakerloo line extension will see the borough connected to the London Underground network for the first time, with two new tube stations proposed at New Cross Gate and Lewisham in Phase One. Transport for London has identified a strong business case for a further extension towards Hayes, which would connnectLadywell, Catford Bridge and Lower Sydenham stations to the tube network and improve transport connectivity in the south of the borough.

Diverse cultural hub

Lewisham was London Borough of Culture in 2022 and is home to one of the capital’s first and recently reaccredited Creative Enterprise Zones in Deptford/New Cross, with a significant number of cultural and creative businesses based throughout the borough, as well as cultural institutions such as the Albany Theatre, the Horniman Museum and Gardens and the Broadway Theatre.

An ambitious and inclusive economy

Lewisham has an exciting mix of Creative Industries and Advanced Manufacturing innovation, marking it as borough of makers and creators. Investment in affordable workspace supports independent businesses, attracts employers and creates local jobs, while borough-wide campaigns boost local spend and footfall. Major developments bring new opportunities, with targeted support to help residents build skills and move into work.

Strong partnerships

Our Local Strategic Partnership brings together the Council, local anchor institutions, businesses and employers, prioritising the foundations for inclusive growth. Goldsmiths University of London is set to establish a second campus in the borough, bringing 600 students to an area in need of local investment.

Green spaces

Lewisham is home to 47 parks and green spaces, ranked by Parks for London as some of the best in London, including the 96-hectare Beckenham Place Park. 24 local parks have been awarded Green Flags.

Excellent schools

99% of Lewisham primary and secondary schools are rated Good or Outstanding, with more and more parents choosing to send their children to local schools.
