28 Jun Lewisham promotes the Bakerloo Line Extension case

Londoners have been urged to back the Bakerloo Line Extension (BLE) which will bring new homes and economic prosperity to many parts of the capital including Lewisham.

At the London Real Estate Forum (LREF), borough leaders highlighted how Southwark and Lewisham were working together to secure the Phase 1 extension to New Cross Gate and Lewisham via the Old Kent Road. The first new station is due to open in 2029 and there are plans to extend it even further.

Damien Egan, Mayor of Lewisham said: “The Bakerloo Line Extension is a critical piece of the infrastructure jigsaw. We’re incredibly excited about putting Lewisham and the South East on the Tube map”.

During a panel debate on the BLE, the project was described as “game-changing” and “transformative” as for the first time the Tube would be in Lewisham.

Bakerloo Line Extension and homes

The benefits will include access to jobs, improved air quality, infrastructure which enables housing targets to be delivered meaning more genuinely affordable homes at London living rent.

This is alongside major developments already taking place such as Convoys Wharf (3,500 homes), Timberyard (1,200 homes) and Lewisham Gateway (900 homes).

However, the BLE needs financial security.  All boroughs along the route were urged to join Lewisham and Southwark in lobbying for the project as the funding is not currently committed.
