Back the bid to bring the Bakerloo Line to Lewisham

Lewisham is on the brink of getting underground services for the first time in its history. However, we need your help to make it happen. Back the Bakerloo Line Extension to Lewisham – sign our online petition.

The Bakerloo Line extension to New Cross Gate and Lewisham will bring great economic benefits to the borough such as 6,000 new jobs and 27,500 homes including many which are genuinely affordable.

It will also mean faster journey times to central London– nine minutes saved on a journey to the West End, a wider choice of destinations, and a tube train every two to three minutes.

The Mayor of London has committed to the extension through Lewisham and Southwark via Elephant & Castle and Old Kent Road, and we need to show the Government that there is widespread public support to secure funding and get the project underway as a priority.

The plans, set out by Transport for London, also include a second phase which could extend the line further south to Ladywell, Catford, Lower Sydenham and all other stations to Hayes in Bromley.

Cllr Brenda Dacres, Lewisham Cabinet Member, said: “I’m backing the Bakerloo because it will bring new jobs, more affordable homes and much improved transport links to Lewisham. It is central to unlocking the borough’s future economic growth.”

The extension will provide additional capacity on public transport network and reduce overcrowding on buses and trains, not just in Lewisham but across London. Indeed, it is not just Lewisham and Southwark that will feel the benefits of the extension. Trains and signaling on the entire Bakerloo line will be upgraded at the same time as the extension and will increase capacity on the existing line by 25%. Across the entire Bakerloo line, the extension and upgrade could support the delivery of over 100,000 new homes and over 130,000 new jobs across London.

If central government approves plans for the extension and the funding needed is secured, construction could begin in 2023. You can help spread the word on social media, using the hashtag #BacktheBakerloo, or by sharing the campaign’s website www.backthebakerloo.org.uk on Facebook or Twitter.
