17 Dec Unique eco project for homeless families nominated for Mayor’s green award

A 47-unit housing development for homeless families in Lewisham has been nominated for a prestigious sustainability award supported by the London Mayor.

The unique scheme at Burnt Ash Hill delivered by Lewisham Homes on behalf of Lewisham Council, is in the running for “The Mayor’s Award for Sustainable and Environmental Planning, sponsored by Terence O’Rourke” at the London Planning Awards on 31 January, 2019 at the National Gallery. This year’s categories have been chosen to tie in with the Mayor’s new London Plan.

The scheme consists of energy-efficient modular units, constructed off-site from eco-materials such as renewable timber, stacked upon each other. It will include 24 two-bedroom and 16 three-bedroom self-contained units as well as seven two-storey houses to provide accommodation for 94 adults and 140 children. A two-storey community/commercial space is also part of the plan.

The development will provide new social housing, desperately needed as the number of households who are homeless or in temporary accommodation in the borough has doubled since 2010/11, currently sitting at 1,900.

It forms part of Lewisham Council’s commitment to deliver 1,500 new social homes in the borough by 2022.
