Remarkable Lewisham regeneration programme showcased

The progress of Lewisham’s development programme and what is to come was showcased at LREF. The Lewisham London site (www.lewishamlondon.co.uk) highlights the borough’s good growth aspirations.

Projects include the huge amount of work underway in Lewisham town centre, on the Lewisham Gateway, after the council took the bold step of removing the roundabout which has blighted the town centre for a number of years and created a huge development parcel.

Many projects have been approved in the last five years and Lewisham’s aiming to bring forward integrated infrastructure and character-led development of the town centre. There are also a number of underutilised sites just south of the town centre, primarily single-story retail sheds which could provide more than 2,500 homes.

In a panel debate, borough leaders discussed how the Government needed to give London the power to raise its own funding from investors such as through pension funds.

The borough is also making a name for itself in the creative industries.

Deptford was said to be surpassing the likes of Dalston thanks to a shift from the East End to areas like Peckham, New Cross and Deptford. The world-class institutions Goldsmiths and Trinity Laban has a great reach within the area, particularly the arts and digital industry
